If you are interested in completing an internship with the probation, please go to the Internship Opportunities section of our site. Internships can be arranged for undergraduate majors in Social Work, Criminal Justice, and other degrees.

Minimum Requirements for Juvenile Probation Officer:

  • Citizen of the United States
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Valid driver’s license from his/her state of residence and qualify for an Idaho driver’s license
  • Comprehensive background investigation that determines the applicant is of good moral character and has not engaged in conduct or a pattern of conduct that would jeopardize public trust
  • Thorough investigation into the character and reputation of the applicant – the applicant’s morality, integrity, reputation, honesty, dependability, qualifications, experiences, associations, emotional stability, prejudice, and loyalty shall be explored
  • Medical examination administered by a licensed physician or designee to determine if the applicant is free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the applicant’s ability to perform the duties of a Juvenile Probation Officer
  • Ability to complete Juvenile Probation Officer Academy through Idaho Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) within one year of hire. For more information see Idaho POST Juvenile Academies.

Ada County Juvenile Court Services Probation Division’s New Employee Orientation is an employee training program by which an individual Probation Officer receives formal instruction outlining the duties and responsibilities specific to his or her position. The training also covers the latest techniques, departmental policies, procedures and practices, and changes in the law pertaining to the supervision of juveniles within the Idaho criminal justice system. This training program is scheduled to cover approximately six to eight weeks, depending on the individual employee’s needs and scheduling availability.

Probation Division New Employee Orientation training is followed by the Field Training Program which is designed to provide an opportunity for the new employee to perform the tasks of the job and to show an acceptable level of competency under the guidance and direction of a Field Training Officer.

The minimum training requirements to be met for Basic Juvenile Probation Officer Certification with Ada County Juvenile Court Services (ACJCS) are:

  • Basic Probation Officer Academy
  • ACJCS New Employee Orientation Training
  • ACJCS Field Training Program

The progression of agency training typically is New Employee Orientation and then the Field Training Program. Basic Probation Officer Academy may occur in the middle of either of these training depending on date of hire in relationship to the date of academy training.

Field Office Training LogoThe purpose of the Field Training Program with Ada County Juvenile Court Services is to train new Probation Officers so that each is prepared to function as a solo Probation Officer at the conclusion of his her training cycle. While Probation Officers attend several weeks of orientation and POST academy training, formal classroom training cannot teach the Probation Officer everything he or she needs to know.

Through the utilization of a Field Training Officer (FTO), the Field Training Program is intended to give the Probation Officer instruction, direct supervision, guidance, and experience so that he or she may develop good judgment, efficiency, and good habits. Training will also serve as an evaluation of the Probation Officer to aid in determining if he or she meets all requirements to become a certified officer.

The minimum training requirements to be met for Basic Juvenile Probation Officer Certification with Ada County Juvenile Court Services (ACJCS) are:

  • Basic Probation Officer Academy
  • ACJCS New Employee Orientation Training
  • ACJCS Field Training Program

Basic Probation Officer Academy may occur in the middle of either of these training, depending on date of hire in relationship to the date of academy training.
