There will always be people in Ada County who need our help. Being a volunteer companion is incredibly rewarding and a wonderful way to give back to your community. As a volunteer, you will visit a designated ward on a regular basis and act as a second set of eyes and ears for the Board of Community Guardians. You are not the care provider or guardian, but the time you spend with award helps us monitor their situation and ensure they are receiving the benefits and care they are entitled to and need.
Many of our wards have some mobility and as a volunteer, you may take them shopping, for a walk in the park or out for lunch or coffee. Many wards just like to sit and visit, play cards or board games or share a book. Our wards live in assisted living or skilled nursing facilities, with a few certified family homes. You may be asked to transport wards to health care appointments or other outside events.
There is no mandatory time requirement to volunteer as each case is different, and the Executive Director will personally match you with a ward that meets your personality and goals. We want you to enjoy spending time with your ward as much they will!

Being a volunteer companion is a serious commitment and requires a big heart!
We are looking for people who are responsible, compassionate, dependable, self-motivated and trustworthy. The role also requires good communication skills, the ability to work with professionals using tact and concern, and time to spend with your new companion.

If selected, we provide 24-hr support and training to help you understand and feel comfortable in your role as a companion. We expect you to maintain a strict level of confidentiality regarding a ward’s personal business, and keep the executive director informed of all activities and issues.
Volunteers must pass a background check. We cannot accept applicants who have been convicted of a violent, sexual or felony crime.
